Helsinki, Finland, June 9th, 2013

LONDON, UK: Today sees the launch of a new sustainability guide, Sustainia100, that identifies the most innovative sustainable solutions around the world. Cuycha Innovation Oy's Carbon Capture and Neutralization (CCN) is selected as part of Sustainia100 for its positive social, economic and environmental impact on local communities.

From Canada to Kenya, Guatemala to the Philippines, Sustainia100 presents the 100 most innovative and impactful solutions out of 500+ nominated projects and technologies. Overall, Sustainia100 maps sustainable solutions successfully deployed in 128 countries. Sustainia100 is a tool for investors, business leaders, decision makers and consumers as it provides insights to the most promising solutions at the forefront of sustainable transformation.

Cuycha Innovation Oy providing sustainable technologies

"We decided to participate Sustainia because we share same mission: Sustainable technologies. Corporations have the responsibility to change production methods to recycle side streams and produce less waste." Markus Kankaanpää, CEO, Cuycha Innovation Oy.

Cuycha is providing sustainable carbon capture technology CCN for CO2 emission reduction. This is not only environmentally beneficial, but is also potentially profitable, too. CCN doesn't just store the harmful CO2, but processes it into a safe, stable form. As part of neutralization the CCN process produces valuable and commercially usable byproducts like potable water and minerals.

In CCN technology the CO2 is captured from flue gas by washing with water (the water may also be sea water or mine drainage) to form carbonic acid. The resulting mildly acidic water is passed through a series of reaction silos filled with crushed feldspar. This material is readily available as it forms over 60% of the Earth's crust. In addition to feldspar also other minerals and waste products like slag can be utilized. The resulting chemical reactions are simple acid/base reactions and the CO2 is neutralized and permanently bound into a carbonate form. The byproducts of this process are typically valuable, easily marketable compounds like aluminum oxides, various carbonates and potable water.

Award to the Best Solution

As a selected Sustainia100 solution, Cuycha's CCN also enters the field of nominees for international sustainability award, Sustainia Award, chaired by former Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Mr. Schwarzenegger heads the selection jury that also includes former Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland, EU Commissioner for Climate Action Connie Hedegaard and Chair of the UN climate panel, IPCC, Dr. Rajendra K. Pachauri.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, Former Governor of California, Honorary Chair of Sustainia Award: “Congratulations to the Sustainia100 for 2013. They are the true action heroes of sustainability. From Canada to Kenya to Guatemala to India, these solutions are proving that we can build communities that are both environmentally and economically sustainable today and for generations to come.”

Connie Hedegaard, EU Commissioner for Climate Action: "It is really encouraging to see that new, innovative solutions continue to emerge in all parts of the world. Here is all the proof we need that sustainable solutions work, that they are profitable, desirable and successful. I look forward to awarding the best one at this year's Sustainia Award Ceremony.”

Erik Rasmussen, Founder of Sustainia: ”Congratulations to the selected 100 solutions. In each their field, these solutions have proved that sustainable alternatives are not only available, but also attractive, competitive and successful. Each and every solution give us hope for a faster transformation to a sustainable future.”

Dr. Rajendra K. Pachauri, Chair of the UN climate panel, IPCC: “Sustainia100 raises awareness about the man-made effects on our environment by giving us 100 man-made solutions. Hence, the challenge of climate change is addressed through harnessing of technology, innovation and research available to the world. With this solution-based approach, Sustainia100 delivers a clear and comprehensive call for action to a broad audience of politicians and corporations as well as civil society."

The winner of Sustainia Award is announced at a ceremony in Copenhagen, November 7th, 2013. The EU Commissioner will furthermore reward the best European solution.

New Solutions and Trends in Sustainability

Research and data behind Sustainia100 reflect new market trends and developments. Increasingly, sustainable innovation acknowledges the importance of consumer behavior by giving users access to data that drive them to change their energy and fuel consumption. More and more, sustainable solutions are using big data analytics to lower waste. Selected solutions also include; waterless dyeing of fashion garments; intelligent streetlights and a virtual power plant.

Cuycha Innovation Oy was incorporated in 2004 by Matti Nurmia, Ph.D. (born in 1930) for the purpose of commercial utilization of the inventions and patents held by him. Most of Dr. Nurmia’s inventions relate to energy production and environmental technologies; his most notable invention being the neutralization of CO2 (Carbon dioxide). In 2011 Cuycha received an honorable mention in Finnish Energy Industries “Climate act of the year 2011” for the CCN technology.

Cuycha’s mission is to upgrade and enhance traditional industrial processes to fit modern environmental and technical requirements and to provide global solutions for cost-effective and low- emission production of energy. Cuycha’s solutions are low- and cleantech; in some cases they turn emissions into valuable byproducts. Cuycha’s main technology is carbon capture and neutralization (CCN). CCN doesn’t just store the harmful CO2; CCN changes it into a safe, stable form. As part of neutralization the CCN process provides valuable and commercially usable byproducts.
